WSOP biggest prize pot

The World Series of Poker

The World Series of Poker has seen massive prize pools year after year, sometimes increasing others decreasing but the winners of these events all walk away thousands (sometimes millions) of dollars richer. Each winner of an event receives a coveted WSOP bracelet, an irreplaceable item that shows the player is a champion. The Poker player with the most bracelets with a total of 15, is Phil Hellmuth who has two Main Event wins.

The Main Event is the most anticipated in the tournament. With a $10,000 buy-in, any Poker player can enter if they have the right amount of funds, it makes this event the largest every year.  Many Poker players have made a name for themselves in this tournament, especially Johnny Moss and Stu Ungar who have both won the event an incredible three times. In 2006, the World Series of Poker saw its biggest prize pot ever. With a total prize pool of $82,512,162, Jamie Gold the winner of the Main Event went on to win a mind-blowing $12,000,000! Not too bad for a few days at work! Here we take a look at some of the most incredible events that occurred in 2006 with the biggest tournament prize pot of all-time.

Jamie Gold is known for being the biggest winner in the history of the WSOP Main Event and fourth-biggest win in a poker tournament but some people question the authenticity of his win and some of the actions that surrounded this historic legendary feat.

Gold came into the Main Event known as a Hollywood agent and Poker player who has learned lessons from legend Johnny Chan. Gold managed to survive the tournament, surpassing 8,772 players, beating seven of his eight opponents at the final table. Gold has since been heavily criticised for his table talk, consistently telling opponents whether his hand was strong or weak, convincing them to fold and show in order to win, at one point he even flashed his face-down card to an opponent to create uncertainty, the player then folded their hand – which would have beaten Gold. Despite his tactics, Gold was never penalised for any rule infraction which sparked huge controversy when he won the event.

It was in the 2006 WSOP that we saw Phil Hellmuth receive his 10th bracelet, meaning he won his 10th event at the WSOP. Hellmuth participated and managed to reach the final table two times before winning his third final table in the $1,000 No-Limit Hold’em with re-buys event. Hellmuth’s run at history was highly anticipated, the final table filled with accomplished pros, but it all came down to Hellmuth’s A (spades) and J (hearts) winning against Juha Helppi’s A (diamonds) 9 (hearts); with the board showing a K, Q, 8 (spades) and 6, 2 (clubs). Since 2006, Hellmuth has gone on to win another five bracelets to put him at the top of the table with a total of 15.

At the 2006 WSOP we also saw: pillow fights, Brandon Cantu getting sponsorship for winning a tournament and Pamela Anderson showed up as a bride at an attempt to promote PamelaPoker.com.
